How to remove an image background on a Mac

Cut the subject out of a photo and save it as a transparent PNG, entirely on your Mac.

Built in: in Preview, choose Tools → Remove Background (macOS 14 and later).

With Garlic

1. Drag the photo and hold ⇧ Shift.
2. Drop on Cut out (page two — the More clove turns the garlic).
3. A transparent PNG appears beside the original.

To put it on a colour or gradient afterwards, use ⌘ Tools → Background, with a live preview.
