How to batch rename files on a Mac

Rename a pile of files by pattern — numbers, today's date, the date a photo was taken, find and replace.

Built in: select the files in Finder → right-click → Rename… (format, replace or add text).

With Garlic

  1. Start dragging the files and hold ⌃ Control for the actions.
  2. Drop on Rename and write a pattern, e.g. {taken} holiday {n}.
  3. Changed your mind? Undo Last Rename in the menu-bar garlic puts the old names back.

Rename, AirDrop, Copy and the other actions never count against the free allowance.
